Do I Need a New Boiler? 5 Telltale Signs
When your boiler is working normally, you probably don’t even notice it. But if it starts playing up, it may be a sign that it needs replacing.
If your boiler is on the newer side, it might only need a replacement part or a service to fix a minor fault. But if you notice any of the signs below, it’s probably a more serious issue, and you may need a full replacement.
Here’s how to tell if you may need a new boiler.
Do I need a new boiler? 5 signs to look out for
1. Regular breakdowns
You can prolong your boiler’s lifespan by booking it in for a regular service.
With that said, if you’re having to frequently call out an engineer in order to take care of breakdowns, it’s probably time to consider replacing your boiler.
New boilers are expensive, but the bills will also pile up if your current boiler is regularly breaking down.
If you’re calling out an engineer more than once a year – aside from your annual service – you may want to look at replacing your boiler.
2. Unusual smells
If your boiler is giving off a sulphurous (eggy) smell, this could be indication of a gas leak.
A gas leak is highly dangerous – if you notice this smell from your boiler, turn it off immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Number on 0800 111 999.
You’ll also most likely need to replace your boiler, too.
3. Unusual noises
Boilers typically make some noises without causing any issues. But if you notice the sounds coming from your boiler are different from usual, it’s worth paying a bit more attention.
Concerning noises include a banging, gurgling or clunking sound accompanied by vibrations in the machine. If the noise is excessively loud or persistent, it may be time to replace your boiler.
4. Poor overall performance
If you notice that your boiler regularly drops in pressure, there may be a leak in the system. There may also be an issue with either its expansion vessels or a pressure relief valve. Get out an engineer to establish what the issue is.
Similarly, if your radiators are taking longer than usual to warm up, your boiler may be wearing out. Your radiators may only need bleeding to deal with the issue, but if it’s more complicated, your boiler might need replacing.
If your boiler keeps shutting off without good reason, this can also be a sign of a deeper issue.
5. Higher energy bills
An inefficient boiler means higher energy bills.
If you’ve noticed your household energy bills slowly rise without any change to your energy usage, your boiler may be inefficient and need replacing.
You can determine your boiler’s efficiency by checking its ERP energy rating. The most efficient modern A-rated boilers operate at 90% efficiency, whereas older G-rated models run at 70% efficiency or less.
